![]() Spellbreak has one of the worst maps in the battle royale genre while the Breath of the Wild-esque aesthetic is nice, the placement of props and landmarks appear to have been done by a rank amateur with little experience in world design of this scale. The developers have yet to release a successful game while they are well-intentioned, having been forced to retire two games within their second year of life, it does not bode well for the long-term survival of Spellbreak, as its heads towards its second birthday. What’s Notable About Spellbreak? Proletariat No, Spellbreak is a multiplayer-only title and does not contain any single-player content at this time. Is There Any Single Player Or Story Content? Yes, Spellbreak supports Xbox controllers natively other brands of controllers may require third party configuration software such as DS4Windows or Joy2Key. Can I Play Spellbreak With A Controller on PC? Honestly, it’s not a perfect system, and I feel being able to choose the skin tone, and gender of the default character would go a long way towards making the game more welcoming for free2play players. While players are unable to customise their characters physical appearance, there are a wide variety of skins available, ensuring that players with the gold to spend will be able to find a character that matches their skin tone and gender. Spellbreak’s cash shop sells only cosmetic items, none of which affect a player’s performance or abilities.ĭoes It Have Good Character Customisation? ![]() Spellbreak has a pretty standard free2play store that offers a rotating selection of cosmetic items, skins, emotes and bundles. Spellbreak is free2play on all supported platforms and is monetised by optional battlepass and cosmetic item purchases. Yes, Spellbreak supports matchmaking for all modes. ![]() Players Poolsĭoes Spellbreak Have A Group Finder/Matchmaking? Like most cross-platform games, console players will only play with or against PC players if they have PC players in their party, while solo players will only be paired with players from the same player pool. Yes, Spellbreak supports crossplay, cross-purchase and cross-progression between all supported platforms. Does Spellbreak Support Cross-Platform Play? ![]() In short, Spellbreak isn’t dead yet, but it is fast approaching the point where matchmaking becomes entirely unviable with ques times already exceeding 5 minutes for much of the day. While all other supported platforms do not release their activity numbers, with multiplayer titles traditionally fairing better on console, and EGS having been the exclusive PC home of Spellbreak until December 2020, the combined console and PC community likely peaks at around 1600 players each day, with EU and NA peak hours being considerably more active than Oceania and Asia. Spellbreak is not entirely dead, but it is in very poor shape with the smallest Spellbreak community (Steam) peaking at around 350 concurrent players each day, it is clearly struggling to offer stable matchmaking for the majority of the world outside of peak NA/EU times. Spellbreak is available on Nintendo Switch, PC (Epic Game Store & Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. With Spellbreak having left early access over 15 months ago, it is possible that, like both World Zombination and Streamline, it is fast approaching retirement, with both titles lasting approximately 18 months before Proletariat “pulled the plug”. It is also possible that the developers have folded or moved onto other projects, which is the most likely outcome when you consider with the exception of Spellbreak, Proletariat’s portfolio is comprised entirely of failed games. While it’s possible Proletariat has one last trick up their sleeve, and the prolonged silence is the result of putting their nose to the grindstone to make Spellbreak’s next and perhaps final mega-update something truly special. Not only did this mega update and, by extension, Chapter 4 not arrive, but the developers have seen fit to essentially ignore the community ever since, failing even to deliver a Christmas or year-end message to the small but loyal Spellbreak community, many of whom have been with them and supported them financially since Spellbreak was in closed alpha. This midseason patch was supposedly the precursor to a mega update that would drop roughly six weeks later in October 2021 and herald the launch of Chapter 4. Proletariat has maintained near-total radio silence since the 1st of September 2021, which saw the release of update 4.1. Spellbreak is a free-to-play class-based third-person battle royale developed and published by Proletariat.
